Rapid growth and a robust economy bring more regulations and a slow down in the building permit approval process as jurisdictions find themselves short the staff needed to process all the new construction permits.
Most builders and developers are finding it takes more and more time to get through the permit process. 6-9 months is now very common in most jurisdictions. Even a simple home improvement permit can take as long as 3-4 months to get a permit approved, from the time you get financing in place for your project.
Many jurisdictions are now allowing applicants to pay extra to have the document and plan checking done by independent engineering companies.
Make sure to ask what the turn around time on the approval is for all departments to get through the review. If it not satisfactory, be sure and ask if there is a process in place to pay extra or pay overtime to have your project reviewed quicker
